Overview

CP&A offers a series of commercial software packages for quick and efficient structural design of material handling equipment of all styles and types.  In addition, we offer SEC2000, a general purpose, stand-alone program for calculating engineering cross-section properties of complex shapes.  For seismic design, we offer custom time-history analysis software that integrates with SAP2000NL.

Structural

CP&A's structural design software allows an engineer to efficiently design cranes and other load handling steel structures.  These programs are available for purchase by manufacturers and engineering firms that wish to optimize designs or review designs prepared by others.

Several structural software packages are available.  The base package includes CPA/STRESS and an accompanying set of CPA programs.  Add-on optional packages to this base package include CPA/FATIGUE and CPA/BUCKLING.

The software is Windows compatible and runs on laptop or desktop PC's.  The finite element module is SAP2000.  Stress calculations are performed automatically for governing load cases, for user defined loads and load combinations.  Thin plate buckling and fatigue calculations are also performed automatically and conform to all the commonly used design specifications such as FEM, BS, DIN, CMAA, and JIS.  Extensive graphics are used to verify that input data is correct.

For further details, refer to full list of CP&A structural programs

Mechanical

Mechanical calculations can be tedious, time consuming, and subject to mathematical error.  All of our mechanical calculations are done by Excel spreadsheet. Through automation of the mechanical design process, these programs can be used to quickly and accurately determine the hoist, trolley, boom, and gantry mechanics for the container cranes or any other material handling equipment that we design.

Section Properties

SEC2000 is a standalone powerful section property calculation program.  You can combine plates, shapes, pipes, arcs, and arbitrary shapes to define a cross section.  SEC2000 calculates area, center of gravity, moments of inertia for the cross section, and also calculates section modules at your defined points.  The program is fully parametric, so you can use constants or define variables to use in expressions that locate and size the plates, pipes, arcs, and arbitrary cross sections.  Sections are stored in libraries.  You can define templates for others to use and make libraries of sections and/or templates so you can standardize your engineering calculations.  Printed output includes input data and typical calculated cross section properties, as well as a scaled graphic of the section including axes and labels.  File output includes ability to custom format the calculated data for use by many of the leading FEA programs, like SAP2000, Algor, Ansys, and others.

Non-Linear Time History Design of Members and Connections

One of the problems encountered in non-linear time-history design is the amount of data produced by the FEA package.  THAnalysis allows the user to define design algorithms for checking members and connections.  The user creates a script file with full variable definition and expression evaluation at each time step.  For large seismic upgrade or rehabilitation projects, this program has been shown to save a significant percentage of the construction costs.  For new design, depending on the design philosophy, typical weight savings would be on the order of 5% to 10% of the lateral force resisting system.  Since the design algorithms are fully user-defined, the program can be tailored for any materials (concrete, steel, composite), any code, and any connection configuration.  The entire structure, members and connections, are evaluated at each of the individual time steps used to define the seismic event.
