CP&A was retained to design a system to improve the seismic
performance of Boeing’s main assembly building complex at the Everett
site. By volume this is the world's largest building. CP&A worked with Austin, Dames & Moore,
and Boeing to develop acceptance and design criteria.
Non-Linear dynamic Time-History (NLTH) analysis was used to design the
rehabilitation which included installation of friction dampers on the
second story braced frames. Multiple rehabilitation schemes were
investigated, with friction damper scheme proving least disruptive and most
economical. Custom software was developed to automate member and
connection checks due to the large quantity of analysis output and the
size of the time-history analysis.
